This gala got worse as the day progressed

Did both locos have a driver then or did they just use 2 locos for the extra power?
I'm honestly not sure if the second loco had a driver, but I believe this was done to move two trains in one go, so they didn't have to travel separately
In terms of purely aesthetic design, it's amazing how well the shape and size of the Western has aged. It doesn't look outdated in the way that, perhaps a class 40 does. Such a shame the class had such a short service life and was never exploited to its full mechanical potential. It would have been really interesting to see the basic parts of a Western, the hydraulic bits, in service today with modern control gear and higher reliability!
